The Extraction Process for Our Mushroom Supplements

Our medicinal mushrooms are extracted at the high potency we request, just for us. Our medicinal mushroom supplements are created using a hot water extraction process. We have these extracted so carefully in order to access the full benefits of medicinal mushrooms. Mushrooms are unique, they have a cellular wall called chitin that must be broken down to release the many bioactive compounds. 

Our dual extraction process, using hot water and alcohol, ensures that the Beta-glucans and triterpenoids, as well as other medical compounds,  are released and made bioavailable. 

For the mushrooms that require dual extractions like Reishi,the first extraction is of the whole dried fruit bodies. They are macerated to crack the cell wall and to pass a 20 micron filter, then they are boiled in water ten different times to pass the mushroom through a 200 micron filter. This hot water extraction process helps to release the Beta-glucans and a number of other polysaccharides. 

In the second extraction the material is soaked in food grade ethanol 4 times for 30 min each time. The alcohol extraction releases the other non-water soluble active compounds such as triterpenes, in the case of Reishi. The material is then heated to evaporate the ethanol and sterilized. The now double extracted liquid is sprayed dried with no additives, and settles into the fine powder we use.

All of West Wolf Medicinals mushroom extracts contain verifiable Beta-glucans made to our exacting requirements, tested by a reputable third party laboratory.  We use Vanguard laboratories in Olympia Washington.
